Marine Mammals

Grey Seal

  • Grey seals are the biggest land breeding mammal in the Uk.

  • Half the worlds grey seals are found here in the uk

  • Grey seal pups weigh only around 14 kg at birth. …

  • Mother and pup grey seals have a strong bond from birth.

Harbour or Common Seal

  • The harbor seal is also known as the common seal.

  • They find ‘haul out places to lay out of the water.

  • They ‘haul out’ just after high tide as the tide drops so they have a long time on the rocks. 

Harbour Porpoise

  • The harbour porpoise is less than two metres long.

  • It weighs about 45 kilos.

  • They sometimes hang out with grey seals to feed eat fish and squid.

Bottle Nose Dolphins

  • Bottlenose dolphins are the most common type of dolphin.

  • They grow to be about 3 -4.5 meters long.

  • They live to be about 45 or 50. 

Orca

  • The killer whale or orca is a toothed whale.

  • They can grow to be 9.7m long. (As long as the Clyde BoatBus.)

  • Orcas eat fish, penguins, seals, sea lions, and even whales!

Minke

  • The minke whale is a  baleen whale.

  • Baleen is made of the same materials as finger nails.

  • All baleen whales have baleen instead of teeth which they use to collect shrimp-like krill, plankton and small fish from the sea.
